A Computer Recording & Practicing Solution for Guitarists
If your music production needs are focused on guitars and songwriting, the GT-001 is for you. Its COSM sound engine offers both instant access and latency-free performance, allowing you to dial up pro guitar tones without the hassle of fiddling with software plug-ins. The built-in four-channel USB audio interface provides lots of flexibility for recording in your favorite DAW, letting you capture processed or unprocessed tones—or both at the same time—in your software. When you record an unprocessed tone, you can then easily re-amp the track through the GT-001 and adjust the sound after the fact to create the perfect sound for a mix.
With the XLR input, you’re able to plug in a mic and record vocals, acoustic guitars, and other acoustic instruments. Of course, the GT-001 functions as a standalone mobile guitar effects processor as well, so you can plug in a set of headphones and practice anytime without being connected to a computer. There’s also a convenient 1/8-inch stereo input, which you can use for connecting a smart phone, music player, or other device for jam backing while practicing.
The GT-001 has audio inputs for a guitar, mic, and stereo line-level device, plus a jack for connecting an optional expression pedal or footswitches.
GT-100 Version 2.0 Sound Engine Inside
The acclaimed GT-100 is BOSS’ most powerful guitar processor ever, and it’s just received a huge performance boost with Version 2.0 software. The GT-001’s sound engine is 100-percent equivalent to the updated GT-100, and patch data can even be shared between the two units. This allows you to use the large selection of free patches available at BOSS TONE CENTRAL, as well as user-created GT-100 patches on the web. Patch compatibility is also great if you already have a GT-100 for stage performing, allowing you to use the GT-001 as a desktop home rig and maintain consistent tones between both setups.
The GT-001 can be powered by the included AC adapter or a computer’s USB bus.
At your fingertips in the GT-001 is a huge collection of amps powered by COSM technology, including a wide range of vintage classics plus unique Advanced amps that deliver enhanced performance based on decades of modeling R & D by BOSS. Just like the GT-100, the GT-001 offers dual effects chains with flexible serial or parallel routing options. You can blend two amps and effects chains together to create super-rich studio tones, build unique and refined sounds with parallel effects, and much more. The effect chains can also be toggled with an optional footswitch, providing channel-switching style functionality for jamming and recording. Effect chains can even be switched with frequency or playing dynamics, allowing you to change your sound by where you play on the neck or by how hard you strike the strings.
The GT-001 also includes monophonic guitar-to-MIDI conversion, another new GT-100 Version 2.0 feature. This lets you explore playing soft synths and other computer-based MIDI instruments with just a normal guitar. Does anyone know if the GT-001 has the EZ TONE feature, either onboard or in the Boss Tone Studio software? When I had the GT-100 I really liked using that as a quick & dirty starting point, then I tweaked from there. Having EZ TONE would definitely make me buy this.

The GT-001 does not have EZ-Tone, but it does have Quick Settings for every effect and amp, which are pre-made, already dialed-in effect and amp settings and tweaks that you can use to quickly build sounds. You can even make your own Quick Settings and save them so you can use your favorite effect settings without having to reprogram them every time.

When will this be available in the U.S.? Also, can the midi note conversion in this work with Progression notation software…can it track that well without a gk3 pickup?

We expect the GT-001 to be available around late April or early May. Please understand that this is an estimate, subject to change.
MIDI by definition is universal, so it should work with Progression or any other MIDI based program. The GT-001’s MIDI conversion is monophonic; it can only send one note at a time-no chords. Within that constraint it tracks very well.

Is the BOSS GT 001 a full audio interface. Can i hear the total mix (hole sing) at recording added with the guitar (with effects) ? Can i use it as my primarly usb audio interface, at hearing music and playing games ?
If yes, what about the monitoring, if i hear from headphones – are the stereo output to the monitors muted ? or do i have some setting for this, because i don’t see any headphone knob.
i hope you will answer soon, i’m thinking of buying one…

The BOSS GT-001 is a complete audio interface, as well as a sophisticated signal processor. You should be able to monitor either from the computer or from the GT-001. If you connect the GT-001 to external amplification, such as powered monitors or a guitar amp, the headphones will mute the amplification. Headphone volume is controlled by the OUTPUT knob.

Hi Nad,
Yes you can add either an EXP pedal like an EV-5 or EV-7 (or an FV-500L which has EXP capability) to control parameters like volume, or effects level, or an effects rate, etc.
Or you can connect two CTL FS-5 pedals, or a single FS-6 pedal. These can be used to turn on/off effects or scroll through presets.
There is only one input for external control so you will need to pick between using an EXP pedal of the FS switches, as you cannot use both EXP and CTL pedals at the same time.

Hello Max:
To record the GT-001 via USB, you must install the proper driver for your operating system. Once you have the driver installed, Logic should detect the GT-001. You can download the driver at http://www.rolandus.com/support/updates_drivers/.
The GT-001 outputs two USB audio streams simultaneously: Primary, which is the total sound of the GT-001, and Secondary, which is a dry track unaffected by the GT-001’s effects, so you can print the effected sound and a dry track for reamping at the same time. Each of these has an output level parameter at the SYSTEM level. You should also set the Direct Monitor parameter of the Primary USB out to off. For more information about this, please refer to page 34 of the owner’s manual.

How do you add an effect to a patch. Seems like you can only mod the existing one. Does it have to be done on the computer software or can it be done on the stand alone unit. I don’t see this in the manual.

You can do this with or without a computer. Each effect has its own on/off parameter. Off removes it from the signal path; on adds it.

If want trem it seems to still be labeled fx1 or 2 etc, not trem. What if I want more than one effect like trem and rotary. It seems like you can only modify the existing effect but can’t rename it or add others.

If you want more than one effect like trem and rotary, you could use FX1 to be trem and FX2 to be rotary. Both FX1 and FX2 can be modified to be different effects, depending which you choose on the TYPE list.
FX1 and FX2 are used to designate one of the various types of effects available under these effect categories. They are kind of a catch all for all the other effects that don’t fall into the other effects block categories, like chorus, delay, reverb, OD, etc.

Hi Yojimbo,
If you want to create a patch from scratch you can use the [WRITE] utility screen and navigate to the Initialize menu and initialize the patch. This turns everything most of the effects off and sets the PrA and PrB to a stock setting. Then from that point you can select an effect block (PrA and PrB are also considered effects blocks for sake of semblance) of your choice and turn it on and dial in the effect.

Hello:
The GT-001 has the same amp models, effects and sound engine as the GT-100, so it could be used for live performance. Of course it does not have any pedals, so controlling it live would be different from using it in the studio.

I correctly downloaded the latest driver of my boss GT-001 and installed it into the device and I have verified that my GT-001 has the ver. 1.03. But my computer won’t detect the device nor the Boss Tone Studio application. I read somewhere in the download instructions that it might not work properly in a USB 3.0. Any answers to why it might not be working? Do I have to install the previous driver before installing the 1.03 version?

IF your computer has USB 3 ports, it is true that they may not work properly. Try a different USB port; also, do not connect to a hub, only direct to the computer. It is also possible that you inadvertently installed an incorrect driver (we have done this here more than once). We have seen that sometimes the previous driver will work, but in theory it should not be the case.
