For a long time, savvy guitar players have known about the special magic that the vintage BOSS DM-2 Delay brings to their sound. That\u2019s why the long-discontinued pedal has fetched such high prices on the used market for two-plus decades now. With the Waza Craft DM-2W<\/a>, the fabled stomp has been completely reborn and then some, offering the same warm analog sound as the classic DM-2, plus additional range and versatility for modern styles. Of course, those familiar with the original have already snatched up DM-2Ws for themselves, and are enjoying its exceptional\u00a0sound now. But if you\u2019re not in on what makes this pedal stand out from the analog delay pack, here are five great reasons you should add one to your setup.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

1. The DM-2W analog delay sound is way different from modern digital delay.<\/h2>\n

The DM-2W has a very rich, full sound, thanks to its all-analog circuit that uses a \u201cbucket-brigade device\u201d (BBD) to create the delay effect. Capable of a wide range of tones from doubling to quick slapback to long repeating echoes, the character of the BBD effect is distinctly different from digital delay, which tends to be very crisp and defined. In contrast, the DM-2W\u2019s echoes sound somewhat dark, fuzzy, and \u201clo-fi,\u201d and\u00a0these characteristics intensify with each echo repeat. And that\u2019s a very good thing indeed, because\u2026<\/p>\n

2. It makes your guitar sound better.<\/h2>\n

The coolest thing about the DM-2W\u2019s lo-fi delay tone is how well it complements\u00a0and supports your straight guitar sound. Like so many classic music tools, it produces\u00a0that magical \u201cglue\u201d that takes an already great tone and makes it even better. While the enhanced definition of digital delays can sometimes create bouncy echo artifacts that get in the way, the analog DM-2W always supports your tone with\u00a0highly musical sounds, even at extreme settings. In its way, the \u201cmurky\u201d BBD sound straddles the line between delay and reverb, and is often\u00a0preferred by many top players over a straight reverb effect (though they work really well\u00a0together too\u2014the DM-2W sounds especially luscious when paired with the new RV-6 Reverb<\/a>).<\/p>\n

While discussing differences here, I should note that digital delay\u00a0is\u00a0in no way inferior to analog delay\u2014far from it! As you probably know, BOSS makes digital delays<\/a> too, and our new DD-500<\/a> is capable of creating a huge range of amazing delays sounds (including a spot-on emulation of the DM-2), many\u00a0of which are simply not possible with analog tech. But while more limited in its scope, analog delay has a really unique\u00a0character\u00a0that’s simply different from the standard digital delay sound, and each type shines in specific applications.<\/p>\n

Basically, if you\u2019re attracted to warm, retro sounds, the DM-2W delivers in spades, and might just meet all your echo needs if you like a simple setup. For more tonal diversity, many players also have a digital delay like the DD-7<\/a> alongside a DM-style delay, kicking in the former for its crisp, distinctive echo effects and super-long delay times when needed.<\/p>\n

3. Two selectable modes give you\u00a0old-school tone with\u00a0modern range.<\/h2>\n

The original DM-2 pedal design was straightforward and simple, offering delay times in the range of 20 to 300 milliseconds, plus\u00a0that classic BBD tone. And when the DM-2W’s mode switch\u00a0is on\u00a0the \u201cS\u201d (Standard) setting, that\u2019s exactly what you get\u2014the real analog DM-2 sound. No emulation here!<\/p>\n

To bring more contemporary versatility to the pedal’s modern Waza Craft incarnation, the\u00a0engineers at BOSS figured out how to take that sought-after original sound and enhance it with longer delay times and a slightly cleaner tone. And that\u2019s what happens when you flip the sound mode to the \u201cC\u201d (Custom) setting.<\/p>\n

Specifically, Custom mode nearly triples the available delay time to 800 milliseconds. That\u2019s getting close to digital delay territory! In addition, the delay repeats are somewhat clearer than Standard mode, though the tonal quality still remains firmly in gritty analog BBD-land. Custom mode brings a lot\u00a0more\u00a0to the party, giving you increased\u00a0range for rhythmic delays\u00a0and dramatic echo effects.<\/p>\n

So, with these two modes, the DM-2W is really far more versatile than the original DM-2. But it doesn\u2019t stop there\u2026<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0You can create intense\u00a0real-time sound effects\u00a0with an expression pedal.<\/h2>\n

The DM-2W also includes another feature not on the original DM-2, which is the ability to connect an expression pedal and adjust the delay time with your foot. (Delay time is normally\u00a0controlled manually with the Repeat Rate knob.) Beyond the obvious hands-free delay time adjustment for specific songs, this also lets you create some very cool real-time effects.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re playing as you adjust the time, a \u201cwarping\u201d sound is produced, where the pitch of the delay repeats is continually\u00a0shifted as it moves to its new setting. (This can also be accomplished by\u00a0tweaking the\u00a0Repeat Rate\u00a0knob by hand, but it’s hard to play at the same time.) Used\u00a0by lots of creative players over the years, this interesting expressive effect was first discovered\u00a0by manipulating\u00a0the time controls on early\u00a0tape delays. On the DM-2W, it\u2019s really effective with the Custom setting, thanks to the increased delay time that’s available. And after you’ve had some time-warping fun\u00a0with the pedal, you might try reaching down and cranking up the Intensity knob for\u00a0some way-cool self-oscillation effects as well.<\/p>\n

While we\u2019re talking about added features, there\u2019s one more: the DM-2W includes a Direct Out jack, which allows you to send echo and dry tones to two separate amps for a big, spacious spread. This feature was actually on the DM-3; it was the next-generation successor to the DM-2 back in the ’80s, with a very similar (though subtly clearer) sound to the original pedal.<\/p>\n

5. It’s 100-percent analog.<\/h2>\n

You can really get a handle on\u00a0the great sounds and features this pedal has to offer in this informative video review, which also appears in Issue 35<\/a> along with a written review. They misspelled “Waza” in the video title, but we’ll forgive them for that. They also state\u00a0that the max delay time is 600 milliseconds in Custom mode, though it’s actually 800.<\/p>\n
